My comments on tutoring Writing Skills : I am in a reading and writing program at Sonoma State called the Hutchins program. I have always been good at writing, and I absolutely love to write. I have a natural instinct to write and to help younger students find their voice through writing.

I would say my teaching style is really focused on the student and what they need. In school I was an average student never getting lower than a C or higher than in an A. So I really want to focus on listening to the student, especially because they probably are not heard at school. I want to make each subject interesting to the student, whether that means going out and playing basketball or chess or candy or anything the student absolutely loves. I want to attach each subject to a good memory, I don't want to pressure them or push them to just memorize facts that I know they will probably forget after they are tested. From my own personal experience I want any student I tutor to turn around and actually enjoy learning about a subject they are having trouble with.

A Little Bit About Me...

I was a community college English teacher for 12 years at Vista Community College in Berkeley, CA (now Berkeley City College). I taught in a special program tailored to working adults who had returned to school in order to earn their Associate of Arts degrees. This was not an academically confident population. They required enormous encouragement, personal attention, and coaching. I was very successful in this position because I was willing to talk with students on the phone, meet with them after class, and even respond to their essays at length on cassette tapes--my own idea!
My approach to teaching is to provide what is needed, and sometimes that is not limited to the explicit task at hand. I have a diverse field of experience. I received a dual B.A. in Linguistics and Anthropology in 2006. This allows me to understand language tutoring at a deeper level than most tutors. This foundation has been augmented by 5 years of teaching experience in ESOL, History, Academic Writing, and Professional interview training which I have conducted all over the world. In 2009, I received my MA in applied linguistics. This degree worked as a capstone to perfect my teaching style in regards to ESL.
