More About This Tutor...

I have been a credentialed teacher for 4 years. I work primarily with students with moderate/severe disabilities. Previously, I was a teacher's aid, tutor and daycare worker. I am credentialed in both general education and special education. I have experience working with a wide variety of learners in all subject areas. I have worked with students who are simply trying to get ahead in school, students who are falling behind and need homework help, students who are about to be retained, to students who are significantly delayed and are on their own curriculum program. My special education background allows me to support all levels of students and support different learning styles.
I prefer to provide students with hands on and/or visual tools during learning when possible. I like to make the educational topic meaningful and interesting to the student.

My comments on tutoring Special Education : I am currently a special education teacher in the Capistrano Unified School District. I have worked as a special ed. teacher for the past 7 years at the 4/5 grade level and this year at the k-2 level. Prior to that I was an istructional assistant in special education schools for 4 years. I have worked with students with the following qualifying conditions: autism, specific learning disabilities, speech and language imapairments, OHI ( other health impairments) ADD, hearing impaired, cognitive impairments, and emotiona disturbances. My first goal is to develop a trusting relationship with my student/students, find out what internal framework they possess, and identify motivational triggers. I am a Howard Gardner proponent, the developer of the multiple intelligences theory. He states, "The quesion is not if the student is smart but how are they smart." I believe in a whole child approach. Children are not just vessels we are able to pour information into. They are unique and dynamic beings that are affected by their emotions, genetics, and prior experiences. I seek to help them develop the skills that will give them a life of the greatest choice.

My teaching approach is eclectic as every child is a different child. One approach does not work for everyone and generally speaking I use a combination of instructional philosophies. No matter what technique, strategy or approach I use, the foundation of my instruction always starts with building a trusting relationship with the child built on caring and respect.

Special Education is one of my top subjects!

I work through positive behavior supports, humor and style to motivate the student to understand the need to learn the core subject matter in order to proceed through high school. I am excellent at reading the needs of the student and creating lessons that are relevant, interesting and fun.
I have taught all core subjects plus art history for over 20 years using various state mandated materials and supplementals I purchased through special ed catalogs. Student outcomes were best with the supplementals due to limited attention span and high interest-low level materials. I use various methods to determine mastery- I create my own written or verbal assessments, writing assignments and have students maintain learning journals. I have a background in educational psychology which is useful in dealing with students with behavioral issues.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have always believed, in order to be a good teacher, you must teach to the varying needs of students and realize, not all children learn the same way. I am very versatile in my teaching strategies- if a program isn't working, I rely on data and feedback to adjust my teaching. I am also very creative and will strive to make learning challenging and fun!
I have always enjoyed working with kids- it is rewarding to see young students experience the learning process. I've been a special education teacher for the past 3 years in a large school district in Omaha, Nebraska. There, I worked with all types of students with varying learning styles and disabilities. I lead many interventions and small groups in the areas of behavior skills, reading comprehension, writing, grammar and mathematics. I am trained in several intervention programs such as Do The Math, ABLLS, and Start-In. I alread ... read more

Fun, high-quality, experienced tutoring

Before becoming a Speech Language Pathologist 7 years ago, , I worked with children with learning disabilities with another speech path, as a tutor, special education aide, liaison for children with learning disabilities in a private school helping to modify curriculum and at Lindamood-Bell. I have 20 years of experience with students with educational needs. Although I have focused on speech for the last few years, I love math and miss helping students learn to love it too.
I like to make learning fun while working hard.

A Little Bit About Me...

Straight out of college, I began substitute teaching and then tutoring individuals. I specialized in English, reading skills, history, psychology, and counseling. Now, I'm a computer tutor, a technical writer on contract, and gone through countless hours on training for these skills, and am now considering a second career as a teacher for non native speakers, for career and computer coursework, and always for writing skills, particularly technical writing. I wrote a book recently called Job Shark, to help people look for jobs, and I'm always amazed at how intimidated people are by computers and technology.
Personally, I prefer hands on - lab style workshops - than endless lecturing and note taking. I like to grasp the student's maturity level and aptitude and go from there. All students need individualized attention, but it is also important to have team building skills inherent in ... read more
