My approach is to establish a relationship with small talk and introductions. A parent must be present at all times. The first thing that I try to do is get to know my client, mainly focusing on what they both like and dislike about school. Then we narrow it down even further to the subject that they are having problems in. I ask them what they think the problem is, find out what the school/teacher thinks the problem is (through review of their coursework including past homework and tests) and come up with a solution that will benefit the student, teacher, and parent to improve and fix the situation.

I believe that first key step to successful teaching is to allows the student convey his/her needs or problem areas. While much can be gained from looking at previous evaluations and test scores, I think that it is crucial to let the student express their needs to make them feel comfortable and build a commitment to the teaching program. In individual sessions, I feel that allowing the student to discuss concepts out loud in addition to completing written exercises and preparing questions facilitates the learning process. I also find that real world analogies are useful ways of linking academic information to previously learned concepts and facilitate the student's understanding.
