I believe that people have different preferred learning styles. Some are visual learners, some audio, some physical, and some use pure intellect. Often, class size prohibits even very good educators from catering to the need of each individual's learning style. It is therefore my job to present subject matter by whatever means necessary for my client's learning to flourish, and to facilitate their mastery of the material at hand.
The summer after my 8th grade year was my first experience teaching. It was there that I facilitated the younger children's use of the computer facilities during a summer reading program. All children are students; they can learn. The question is how best do they learn? I have used many differing styles from rote memorization through self-paced self-education. I encourage students to see the wonder and "mystery" (there really isn't any mystery) of Math, regardless of the level, in the real world. To that aid, I try to present real world problems at levels the student can understand. For lower level students, I investigate with them the development of the linear equations involved in setting up a relationship between two factors. A higher level student would solve multiple linear equations. A height vs. time linear relationship then can become quadratic, thus involving sports as an application.

I like to combine both direct instruction and hands-on activities when teaching. I believe that allowing students to apply their learning to real-life situations helps them to both find meaning in their learning and attach the learning to a memorable experience. I get really excited about the subjects that I teach and my excitement carries over to my students. And, when students are excited about what they are learning, they want to continue to learn more about that particular subject.

Compasionate and understanding. I like to approach the root cause of the problem. A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy working with children and feel that they each have their own individual learning style. At times, I feel that conventional educational methods may fail some children. Educators must learn to be flexible, and allow students to learn in the style that they feel most comfortable. As a tutor, I feel that establishing a good rapport/friendship with my students before trying to "teach" them anything has been the most successful. If a child feels that you understand them and are interested and invested in their lives, you can become much more skillful at helping them to learn.

I firmly believe that teaching and learning is inextricably tied to subjective factors, and that students learn best when the material is presented to them in a way that is both accessible and interesting. I believe that meaningful learning takes place when students are actively engaged in the material, through activities and experiences that immerse them directly in the concepts that they are expected to understand. I design learning experiences that are logical and meaningful to students, and encourage them to develop the self-regulation skills that will aid them far into their academic careers. I am trained in modern pedagogical techniques, and have experience applying these techniques with success.
