I believe the role of a teacher (tutor) is to motivate students to want to learn. A Little Bit About Me...

When I first started college, I had no idea what to major in. I started taking creative writing and literature classes though, and found my niche in English. I enjoy writing, reading, proofreading, checking grammar and punctuation, and find myself reviewing billboards and magazines for errors. I've been able to put these skills to actual use as an instructor, tutor, and advisor for college students. I have taught Business Writing, Business Communication, and Keyboarding classes. I have also had a great deal of experience with public speaking and have played piano for more than 20 years. In the end though, it's a great joy to see a student "get it" and to help them realize their full potential.

The best validation I have for my teaching style is to watch my students. They are well-rounded in their knowledge and confident in their performance. I believe in enabling my students, showing them skills that will help them become independent learners. I believe that every person has strengths. When I meet my students for the first time I find out what those strengths are, and we start from there. My teaching style is, for the most part, non-directive. I think it is important to try to have students answer their own questions. When this does not work, I do not just tell the student what goes where or why this doesn't work, I give reasons and have them tell me these same reasons the next time we come across something that doesn't work.
At SCSU, I work as a writing consultant at the Writing Center on campus. With students, I help to make them better writers by helping answer questions, presenting questions, working through the brainstorming and paper-writing process, and helping with formatting.
