I love the learning process. My goal is to provide an environment for the student to grow to love the process of learning. I see myself as a guide there to encourage the student in certain directions and to lead him to specific discoveries. I know when to patiently wait for discovery to occur and when to offer additional help and guidance. It is my considered opinion that there are many styles of teaching that can work effectively with students. Generally, I feel that it is best to adapt the style of teaching to the personality, interest, and capability of the student. My preference is working with teens and young adults, with whom I find that a style that guides them to find the answers for themselves is of greatest advantage. To do this, I tend to patiently guide students with a series of questions, only "jumping in" with information when they begin to appear to have reached a point of frustrated impasse.

It is my experience that an instructor delivers more learning when a student has an interest in the subject. "Inspire rather than require," has far greater efficacy in delivering information. I tend to make it fun, interesting and encourage student participation and feedback. Reward, a basic human desire, engenders craving for learning. As each individual’s qualities are unique, I try to determine if one is a visual, auditory or tactile learner. Analogies often make good teaching aids. For example, if the subject were human circulatory systems, shining a light through a leaf reveals veins similar to our own and is more apt to draw the student into the subject. During my studies at USU I worked at Adams Elementary both as a Teachers Aid as well as a Mentor during the After School Program. I worked one-on-one as well as in groups of students grade k-5. This position was one of the most rewarding and enjoyable that I've had and would love to continue. I have also taught American Sign Language at the University in their ASL Labs for a year.

I believe that whenever I'm working with a student they have the capacity to learn and internalize the material. I believe that the student can learn the material. My method of mathematical and scientific instruction is based off the Polya style of teaching where the instructor guides their students by questions and reviewing the known information. Thus the student's questions drive the student towards the answer desired. I find great personal reward when working with students. I try to avoid giving students an answer immediately, but rather try to pry the answer out of them with questions so that they can figure out the answer themselves. I see teaching as helping/forcing the student to think things out and make discoveries for themselves, not just being spoon-fed information. Of course, sometimes it is necessary to tell students the answer if all else fails (after all, it is important that learning is not a frustrating activity for the student), and rote memorization can be a valuable tool every now and then. What strikes me most as I look back at my education is how much of an impact a teacher can have when they make their subject relevant to their students. When I am teaching I try to find out what motivates each student as a person, in addition to what is motivating them to take the class.
