A Little Bit About Me...

I love the learning process. My goal is to provide an environment for the student to grow to love the process of learning. I see myself as a guide there to encourage the student in certain directions and to lead him to specific discoveries. I know when to patiently wait for discovery to occur and when to offer additional help and guidance. When learning is enjoyable and curiosity is created, the student finds the resolve, motivation, and determination necessary to continue learning. Hopefully, it will become a lifelong habit.
Though my primary study has been of a religious nature, I am very skilled in the other subjects of a quality educational foundation, as well. I am especially gifted at math as I scored a 730 in math on my SAT's. In 2003 I worked at Cedarcrest High School in Duvall as Special Education Assistant tutoring students with ADD and ADHD. I have also taught in a ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

It is my considered opinion that there are many styles of teaching that can work effectively with students. Generally, I feel that it is best to adapt the style of teaching to the personality, interest, and capability of the student. My preference is working with teens and young adults, with whom I find that a style that guides them to find the answers for themselves is of greatest advantage. To do this, I tend to patiently guide students with a series of questions, only "jumping in" with information when they begin to appear to have reached a point of frustrated impasse.
I have twenty-five years of experience teaching religious subject matter(and the Bible)in smaller church settings. I have both a Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree, and am in the process of completing a professional Doctorate at a local seminary. I have also had the opportunity to teach a graduate level semi ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

It is my experience that an instructor delivers more learning when a student has an interest in the subject. "Inspire rather than require," has far greater efficacy in delivering information. I tend to make it fun, interesting and encourage student participation and feedback. Reward, a basic human desire, engenders craving for learning. As each individual’s qualities are unique, I try to determine if one is a visual, auditory or tactile learner. Analogies often make good teaching aids. For example, if the subject were human circulatory systems, shining a light through a leaf reveals veins similar to our own and is more apt to draw the student into the subject. When appropriate, I ask the student to teach me.
In graduate school, I developed a management style, Egalitarian Leadership. The faculty encouraged me to submit my paper to Harvard Business School. Currently, I am writ ... read more

I try to match my own teaching style with the learning style of the student with whom I am working, paying particular attention to language and vocabulary usage. I also strive to emulate my favorite math teacher's ability to think out loud in teaching any kind of problem solving task.
Since completing my formal degree training I have worked in several capacities in the field of education. I taught inner-city young adults in Washington, D.C. in all GED subjects. I worked as a Guidance Counselor and Education Services Officer for the Army for eight years. In the past two years I have tutored under the auspices of Tacoma Community College in all GED subjects. During my studies at USU I worked at Adams Elementary both as a Teachers Aid as well as a Mentor during the After School Program. I worked one-on-one as well as in groups of students grade k-5. This position was one of the most rewarding and enjoyable that I've had and would love to continue. I have also taught American Sign Language at the University in their ASL Labs for a year.
Everyone has the ability to learn but not everyone has the same ability. Most people are visual or tactile learners whereas most teachers, in my experience, use verbal/aural instruction methods. I believe in tailoring my teaching to the needs of the student and not to what I am most relaxed with. I have personally taught several tactile students who had to have something in their hands or they could not grasp the concepts. Other times I've instructed students in strong visual methods incorporating drawin ... read more

I believe that whenever I'm working with a student they have the capacity to learn and internalize the material. I believe that the student can learn the material. My method of mathematical and scientific instruction is based off the Polya style of teaching where the instructor guides their students by questions and reviewing the known information. Thus the student's questions drive the student towards the answer desired. I find great personal reward when working with students. After explaining information and working on helping a student understand the material there's sometimes that moment when you can watch the student go from not knowing what's going on to sudden understanding. Moments like that make my day.
I recently graduated from the Evergreen State College with a degree in mathematics. My other fields of study included chemistry, computer science, and physics. I have numer ... read more

I try to avoid giving students an answer immediately, but rather try to pry the answer out of them with questions so that they can figure out the answer themselves. I see teaching as helping/forcing the student to think things out and make discoveries for themselves, not just being spoon-fed information. Of course, sometimes it is necessary to tell students the answer if all else fails (after all, it is important that learning is not a frustrating activity for the student), and rote memorization can be a valuable tool every now and then. Above all else, I would describe my style as being patient and trying to allow the student to have fun and be interested in the topic under study.

A Little Bit About Me...

In the past I have worked with students both one and one and within a group setting, and feel comfortable adapting to any particular group or individual's needs. I believe effective teachers must compose a delicate balance of meticulous discipline and natural concern. The best teachers and professors of my academic career were not only intelligent, but carried a contagious passion for what they studied. I would like to think my teaching style is the same.
In college I volunteer tutored at the Crawford Country READ center to a pupil struggling with reading comprehension, writing and mathematics. In addition to this, during my senior year at Allegheny College I was a teaching assistant for a Research Design and Statistics I and II course. Furthermore, I am currently living in Pittsburgh as a private tutor. As a recent college graduate I can understand the difficulties some students m ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I treat math phobias and anxiety with respect. I teach students to be relentless when conquering their math problems. With the younger crowd, I often turn it into a game. With older kids and teens, I stress the importance of exposure and repetition.
I've taught in a Preschool classroom at my church for 1 year, and I've been a substitute teacher for the 2nd grade classroom at my church for 2 years. I've homeschooled two children for the past 11 years, and I've spent two years as a math instructor at a homeschool co-op. I've also worked as a tutor for Eastern Washington University's Computer Sciene Department for 2 years, and I've mentored several co-workers in software development over the past 28 years.

A Little Bit About Me...

What strikes me most as I look back at my education is how much of an impact a teacher can have when they make their subject relevant to their students. When I am teaching I try to find out what motivates each student as a person, in addition to what is motivating them to take the class. My goal is to find a way to present the material in such a way that the experience of learning is a journey of meaningful discovery that corresponds to the course content.
While completing my BS in engineering, I spent two years tutoring math, physics, and optics. During my senior year I was also able to teach a portion of two terms of the freshman optics class. During the last four years I have worked as an aerospace engineer, and as a private contractor. Although these weren't teaching positions, I believe that these experiences have given me unique opportunities to share my knowledge and wi ... read more
