My teaching is relational and student centered. I motivate by affirmation and encouragement. I beleive it is important to listen to students and pay attention to their strenghts, fears, hopes, and passions. I taught 7th grade English for one year and 5th grade general education for three years. Prior to teaching, I tutored writing and study skills in our university acedemic skills department. I have also tutuored adults learning English as a second language and adults learning to read. Additionally, I have worked at after school programs, homeschooled a student who could not attend school for 3 months because of a brain injury, and volunteered as a reading partner for an elementary school student for three years. My most previous work experience has been as a pastor of two rurual congregations in Iowa. My family has recently relocated to Richland Center, WI.

I am an interactive teacher, and I believe in step by step instructions when needed. Most importantly, I believe in the power of clear thinking combined with creative thinking. My degree is in secondary education with a minor in philosophy and a major in English. I taught English for 40 years and am now recently retired. I taught English overseas while in the US Peace Corps, 1969-71. I taught English at MATC for two years. Most of my career was at the high school level teaching all types of classes, such as literature, Shakespeare, creative writing, reading, plays and drama, speech, etc. after retirement, I became a writing facilitator for elementary teachers. I worked with grades 1-8 teaching the six traits of writing. I have also tutored several students.

I like to laugh, have fun, and create a comfortable environment for individuals to learn. It is important to have that type of space so as to ensure that students do not form a sense of anxiety when entering the room or when studying that particular subject. I love creating a variety of activities: group, individual, hands-on, problem solving, comprehension and reading, and activities where students have to get up and move around. As long as concepts and terms are rehearsed and relearned students will be able to store it better than if they learned it once and then move on to the next concept. I believe that mutual respect and understanding is fundamental to a student-teacher relationship. I take time to get to know my students, both to understand their personalities for the purpose of choosing a teaching style that would be more effective with them, as well as to let them know that I genuinely care about them and their success. Compassion, encouragement, and patience are three qualities that I believe are so important to removing the effective filter that a student creates within him/herself when he/she feels uncomfortable. Once that "wall" is removed then true learning and comprehension can take place and this is what I strive to do with each of my students.
