Texas Certified Teacher: Early Childhood thru 5th Grade

The relationship that I and your child will have will be based on mutual respect, and I will ensure that your child's academic specific needs will be my focus. Each child has a different way to learn. As a trained and certified teacher I find ways that my students can grasp the concepts and learn. I believe that concepts should be learned first on a concrete level, using hands on strategies. Once they "get it", we can move on to more abstract ways to understand.
I taught Early Childhood and Elementary school, grades Pre-K through 5th, in the Houston Independent School District for 10 years. I mostly taught 1st grade. It is amazing to see them progress and learn, from non readers to readers, from non writers to story writers. Since I moved to Baton Rouge I continued tutoring children struggling academically in the areas of Math, Reading, Language Arts, Spanish, and Social Studies.

I am a Master's recipient and a prospective medical student

I have recently completed my course of studies in Medical and Biological Sciences and was awarded my Master's Degree from Mississippi College in Clinton, Mississippi on December 19, 2014. I hope to begin Medical School in the fall and am currently awaiting word of my application status at LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans and in Shreveport. I finished graduate school with a 3.9 GPA, was salutatorian of my high school class, and have an extensive history of academic accomplishment in both the classroom and in academic competition. My approach is to cater to my students. For example, if a student is very interested in comic books and I am tutoring them in Spanish, I would find Spanish comic books appropriate for their age group. When it comes to history I like to introduce my students to the importance of essay writing and how to write a good history essay as well as timelines and Historical Identifications. If I am tutoring a high school student not only will I help them with their current work but I would also prepare them for history on the college level. I want my students to excel and be prepared for whatever comes next in their educational journey.

A Little Bit About Me...

I think the most useful tutor emphasizes critical thinking. I have noticed that many students focus on memorization instead of really understanding the processes behind science, math, and foreign languages. I try to focus on how and why things are, rather than just the fact that they are. I believe that this approach provides students with a deep understanding of the material and an ability to problem-solve on their own. They can then develop better comprehension, and tend to be more interested in learning.
I graduated with my undergraduate degree in marine biology in 2002 and then worked as a research biologist for two and a half years before returning to school to pursue my master’s degree.
