My comments on tutoring Saxophone : 5 years of individual & group instruction

I split my time between running a fantastic youth leadership development non-profit (facilitating workshops in creating positive school climate, community activism, and substance abuse/addiction education) and directing musical theatre. I graduated from Pomona College with a B.A. in Psychology, and use my degree in many ways in my careers.
Fun, interactive, empowering!

Saxophone is one of my top subjects!

As the Director of Curriculum and Program Development as well as the lead instructor for two music schools, my background has seen me teaching about 70 students a week while implementing several programs that focus on the quality and administration of all academic programs in the school. These programs offer opportunities for students to focus on songwriting with a strong emphasis on theory and applied musical knowledge. The programs allow students to develop group etiquette, arranging skills, and an understanding of moderate to advanced level theory while learning about the studio experience. The experience as a Director combined with graduate study has allowed me to be involved in the development of instruction materials, level requirements, improvement in the school’s methods of composition teaching, teacher hiring, and the evaluation of fellow instructors. A Little Bit About Me...

I have a BA in Microbiology and an MA in Zoology. I have 7-8 years experience teaching biology, ecology, microbiology and environmental science at the college level. In addition I have many years experience in software engineering, technical writing, software quality assurance, and technical editing.
In the classroom I rely on traditional lecture, supplemented by Powerpoint presentations, animations, and lists and diagrams on the white board. I usually assign a research paper. In the last few semesters I've implemented through Blackboard some online testing, as well as tutorial "homework" quizzes, where the students get feedback directing them to coverage of particular sections of the text. I always try to make students aware of how the detailed, technical concepts of the moment fit into the "big picture," making references both to material previously covered and to material y ... read more

I like to get to the point of certain problems, such as reading the child/student when I see them, ask them some questions about the subjects they need help in and why they need help. I have worked with Infants-School age for over 5 years, and enjoy being there to help someone in need. I believe in giving back, because so many of us are blessed already.
As an early childhood teacher, I have had several opportunities to help children (school age), to do homework. I also was a tutor in high school to a boy for just Algebra, which then turned around to being all of his subjects and helping him keep on track. The hardest thing for me was that he had only lived in the U.S. for four years, and had trouble speaking English. After each session of tutoring, I would grab the Scrabble board, which encouraged him to use more words, learn new words, and have fun while doing so.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been teaching children of all ages for over 25 years. My primary expertise has been in music education. I use a variety of teaching styles and methods for children. I use various styles of music, composers and performers in lesson plans. Currently I am using books on music and musicians as part of my lesson plans. I believe literature is extremely important in teaching children. I am direct with children in my classroom.
