I do not like to teach out of textbooks. I use them primarily as resources. I prefer to create a lesson or activity that plays to the strengths of the individual child/student and challenges them on their particular level. I have found interactive lessons are very effective for all age ranges.
I spent 2 years tutoring Math for the students in my Mothers classroom afterschool (4th grade). I spent one year in college working with special needs students from the local elementary school, which included writing lesson plans and executing activities in group form. I believe that a big part of teaching is listening and observing. Not every student learns the same way, so it is important to be patient and try to understand what works best for the student. In many cases, examples are helpful in learning. Examples that are tailored to a specific student (e.g. drawing correlations to cooking for measurements, or sports for averages) can be a great basis for understanding concepts. I have done classroom teaching and one-on-one teaching. I prefer the one-on-one approach because it is so effective, and so satisfying for myself and the student when progress is made.
