As a journalist and teacher, I've always enjoyed getting the most out of the English language and passing that knowledge on to students of all ages. I base my teaching on the axiom that "writing is thinking," that the writing challenge brings out the best in us, and that we owe it to ourselves to take pride in our work, which means rigorous revision, self-editing and proofreading. My students learn the value of equating clarity with brevity, writing to include and not exclude, and following a writing process that emphasizes careful pre-writing, or brainstorming.
When I teach writing, I emphasize -- and ensure that the students practice -- rewriting. Not even professional writers get it right the first time. I have worked with students who were given up on years before, but once the met me, they evolved and became what so many said they never would become, educated.Vgotsky talked about the zone of proximal development and potential. My experience as a tutor during my school years has taught me that students have hard time on subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Calculus and Biology, not because they didn't have good instructors, but because students were not provided enough background information on various topics. I have always employed a fun-filled curious environment to my students which have helped them come up with more questions and instill passion on the subject matters.
I provide enough background information on the subject matters first, give a big picture of the subject matters and then break things apart and teach them parts. This methodology has always been effective because students find it easier to learn all the necessary ingredients in order to grasp the big topic. I always make sure students are given enough practice questions on subjects like calculus, physics and chemistry.
