My teaching style is to get my students involved in the English process; from grammar to vocabulary to basic syntax, I try to make my classes fun and interesting as well as productive. English has always excited me and I want my students to be excited as well. I am often amazed at how a student's skill level improves when a teacher brings an element of fun to a classroom. A good example is having my students each bring a vocabulary word to class that they have recently heard or seen and try to "stump the teacher".
I taught Court Reporting English (4 levels) for a private college in Bakersfield, CA., from 1986-1990. I have been tutoring students in English off and on for the past 18 years. I don't think there is a better feeling then to see a student be proud they were able master something they thought impossible. If I had to say what method I used to teach students, I would have to say that every student is different, and that what works for one may not work for the other. I would say my approach would be to first understand what may be causing them to struggle, then working from there to teach them to be confident in their ability, and providing the appropriate tools needed to succeed.
