My teaching style is centered around working with an individual wherever they happen to be at. In college, I assisted other students in Drury's writing lab. And, as an editor and journalist, I have extensive skills in dealing with helping reporters to communicate clearly and succinctly. I graduated magna cum laude from Drury University, a private liberal arts college, in 1987, with a major in fine arts (photography and graphic design emphasis) and minor in communications (four years experience on the college newspaper). I also have 21 years of experience as an editor at weekly and daily newspapers in Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma. Working primarily at smaller newspapers, I have an extremely varied background of experiences - from writing "hard" news and features to on-the-job training for new reporters just out of college or new to the profession.

I'm currenty enrolled at OTC using my A+ to get my associates degree before transferring and getting my degree in Secondary Education with an Emphasis on English and Journalism. I took all Honors English classes throughout my junior high and high school years of education. I also have five years of journalism experience, four of those years as an editor for my paper. As far as elementary education goes, I tutored at the kindergarten level and have experience helping students with their homework from my experiences babysitting and watching children during local PTA meetings.

I am currently a substitute teacher at Mountain Grove Schools. My practicum was completed at Mountain Grove Elementary. Subjects taught include math, science, reading and social studies. I have worked one-on-one with students who need extra help. My coursework includes child development and exceptional children. I just earned my bachelor's degree this past May at Drury.

I have taught more than 130 sections of twenty two different courses in seven different academic disciplines at five different colleges and universities. I have graduate degrees from Harvard and Johns Hopkins. I read seventeen languages. I have children who are twenty one, seven, six, four, and two, as well as a granddaughter who is three. No two have learned in precisely the same way, and I have had to use multiple approaches to help them learn. I have also coached teams in five sports. I have spent a lifetime teaching kids to do things they never dreamed they could attain. I know that kids can learn anything they wish, and can become anything they wish.

I first must one hundred percent become knowledgeable and comfortable with the material I will be teaching. I enjoy being able to personalize myself not only with the work but the students as well. I am willing to work with complicated schedules. For the past several years I have owned a run my own Grant Writing Company. I specialized in the teaching and the mentoring of my clients in the Grant application process. I worked hand-in hand with them in preparing the detailed paperwork. I aided them in so as they were able to shape their business proposal so that it would fit the necessary criteria to recieve various grants. I feel capable and confident teaching children of any age and aptitude. I am a firm believer in setting up a solid foundation of competence in a subject before moving on. I pride myself on being able to quickly and accurately assess the present faculty of students and work to reinforce the foundation of that aptitude before moving on to more advanced concepts. Once a firm foundation is established, moving forward becomes a simple matter because all contingent concepts are thoroughly understood and the confidence of the student is established. I have had success with this method because it provides the student with a very real and tangible sense of confidence on which to proceed forward. I love teaching and working with all children. I prefer a one on one setting and use positive constructive teaching methods. I am a good listener and have a lot of patience. I enjoy watching others learn and am good at picking up nonverbal cues. I have the ability to keep my students interested in their subject matter. I spent a year and half of my college career studying Elementary Education before switching to Psychology. I have a passion to inspire students to reach their goals and develop to the higest level they can. I believe in the power of determination, and reaching for the best. Many students just need support and information to obtain the level of perfrmance they long to reach. I enjoy working with children as well as young adults. I like to ask questions and provide direction to answers that will help students solve problems on their own. Giving students the ability to discover amswers is a great way to empower them for future problem solving. I also believe that the words we use and the tone of voice used by a teacher can have a powerful effect on the students desire to learn.
