When explaining concepts to students in classes that I sub-taught I felt the best approach was to talk to individual students and use a whiteboard to clearly explain the concepts. I usually would give hints or start the problem, and then I would look for the student to add insight on how to progress. Not all students learn in the same fashion, and that must be considered in planning and implementing lessons. This would help them with their implementations.
I like to first show a basic example of the problem, then show how the problem can be solved. I will then show another example that is a little more involved. After this, I let the person being mentored try solving a similar problem.
