I have worked in both the public and private school settings and have 20 years teaching experience. I enjoy the most the opportunity to work with a child individually because that direct time and attention often makes it easier to assess areas of weakness and how best to adapt instruction to the learner's needs and learning style. One of my most cherished teaching positions was at the Arkansas School for Mathematics and Sciences, a residential high school for gifted junior and seniors. I teach each person on an individual level. There are several reasons behind this. Some of them are: people have different strengths and weaknesses, people learn at quicker/slower rates than others, some individuals are more adept at one subject matter than another, and the motivation of the individual varies greatly from person to person. I try to teach by example. I also believe in constructive criticism and use positive reinforcement. I always try to give examples and "paint a picture" so that the person clearly understands the subject being taught. Hands on, discovery, field trips, audio, video, anything I can pull in to teach with is essential to making it the best learning experience that I know how.
