Anyone CAN learn ANYTHING...I promise. :)

I believe that happy people not only learn faster, but they also retain more. Far too much of our kids' lives are spent cooped up indoors. Therefore, I like to take an open-door approach to learning and like to schedule as many sessions as possible out of the house/library/etc. Each session is guaranteed to be filled with fun learning experiences that the pupil will be sure to remember. A session with a child that needs reading/spelling/comprehension, for instance, could very well be done at the zoo. I want my kids to learn, and have fun doing it! Our planet has so much to offer in the ways of educating our children! I never have to look far to find a teaching/learning opportunity!

Reading and writing are, and have always been, enjoyable for me. However, I know that a lot of people do not feel the same way. My goal is to show students that if he or she can get past the miring details that oftentimes come with English, it can be pretty dang interesting. Since revealing the fun parts of English is my goal, I am not super strict nor do I expect students to master the subject material right away. Working on the learning level of students, my aim is to guide them as they themselves discover new subject material.

A Little Bit About Me...

As I graduated with an honors bachelor’s degree in Biology, I started working at my university as an academic tutor. Based on the performance of my students, I was further promoted to the “Lead Science Tutor” position where I could share teaching techniques and train incoming tutors as well. I had always been interested in teaching and been a good communicator to people of all age groups. I was the president of Society for Neuroscience and organized many community education outreach events. As an academic tutor, I was able to use my patient, motivating, and goal-oriented nature to help my students not only do well in one course, but also improve their study habits altogether and achieve long term goals.
I have a positive and patient way of getting through to students. Science was my favorite subject matter in college and I like to break down difficult information into terms th ... read more

My style of teaching is very associative. I like to take any material that my student is trying to learn and present it in a way they can relate to, or may apply to them directly. The different lifestyles of our students affect their learning behaviors. A child who has never been more than ten miles from home and whom has never seen a play, may find it difficult to relate to William Shakespeare. A child who lives in financial distress may find it easier to understand mathematic principals if they apply them to money.

I love working with children. I have 3 of my own and I am currently studying for a Master of Science in Higher Education so that I can teach. I would love to teach college courses, but my main focus is teaching elementary students. I think it would be easier for me to tutor younger kids versus high shcool children. Even though that's where my experience is at, I just love working with smaller kids. I've volunteered at preschools and kindergarten classes and I absolutely love to work with them.
I worked as a tutor coordinator for the YMCA tutoring children from the ages of 12-16. I helped them in basic studies to ensure that they had a grade of a C or better. My goal is to open up an after school program so that I can help students who may need tutoring after school get the grades that they need to pass on to the next level. I enjoy helping students reach their full potential & feeling a sense of accomplishment. I received a Liberal Arts education because my parents thought as did my teachers, professors, & I that a Liberal Arts education teaches creativity, flexibility, sound, logical reasoning, & good judgment. It is these ideas which I want to impart to my students. My philosophy of education includes utilizing the student's background in order to help the student discover & create meaning so that he or she can learn & better understand the material they must learn in order to become successful. I love to read; I always carry a book with me, & I share this love with my students. Every successful person in life that I know of reads; reads well, & reads often.
