I have been a tutor for 23 years and I have taught Adult Basic Education for 12 years. I am still continuing my education to receive a Masters degree and plan to get my PhD. I work for a community college and have done advising, enrollment, testing, phone directory, and student sevices. I have attended many professional development workshops on education.
Critical thinking skills and untraditional ways are what I focus on. However the way someone learns, I will try to set the individual up to show how they learn and work with them. My teaching style is very holistic. I want to empower students to discover and employ their voices. I want to develop critical thinking skills, analysis, synthesis, and retention, basically, I want to help people *THINK* about what they are saying, what they are doing, to interpret the world around them. In the end, it is the student's choice whether or not they modify their papers. I believe in having a one on one discussion. I am resourceful. My comments on tutoring Composition : I am a certified English and French teacher with 18 years of experience.

My teaching style...? I do not have only one; part of the point of tutoring is the ability to truly tailor styles/strategies to individuals or small groups. I must say that I am the funniest person I know, and I crack myself up all the time. Humor is always one of my favorite/best strategies.

English and Writing CAN be Fun!

The collaborative learning approach, where students are encouraged to discuss what and how they're learning, is most effective. Students tend to engage much better with course material when the instructor has discussions with them, as opposed to lecturing at them.
Since being awarded a master's degree in 2008, I've taught English composition, literature, and reading comprehension courses at Wayne State University, Henry Ford Community College, Oakland Community College, and Jackson Community College.
