I believe every student has their own learning style. As a teacher, I believe it is my responsibility to find the style that works best for the student to help ensure the student not only learns the material but is also able to retain the information. I believe successful learning can be obtained by providing a relaxed environment that provides the individual structure and attention each student needs.
I have more than 5 years experience as a substitute teacher at almost every level. I have had the opportunity to also serve as a long term substitute teacher. I also have 1 year of experience teaching at a pre-school level, 2.5 years teaching at a post-secondary level, and a semester of tutoring a middle school student. I really enjoy ideas. One of my favorite things is to see someone make a connection for the first time between two ideas or concepts. I enjoy teaching through dialogue and conversation. I have a gift, I'm told, for analogies, and for explaining things in ways that enable people to understand new or complex ideas. My goal in teaching is always to help the students make personal connections with the material, and to show them how the "theoretical" topic of study intersects their life in a real, practical way.
During my time at the University of Missouri-Columbia, I earned two degrees: a BA in Philosophy and a BA in Theater. I also took many writing classes, focusing on different types of creative writing, from fiction to poetry to playwrighting.
