A Little Bit About Me...

I try to take a hands-on approach to teaching when possible. I find it helpful to use varied and often unusual objects and materials when teaching a lesson; it tends to make the material more memorable. However I am not above using the standard pencil/paper/textbook approach when needed.
I consider myself to be a "beginner" teacher as I have recently graduated college and received my license. I have spent roughly 500 hours in the field as a result of college course requirements, and I have successfully completed a 12 week internship (student teaching) experience. I have had the opportunity to work in many different subject areas and classroom settings with students of various backgrounds, ages, and learning styles.

Simple Steps. The main key to successful learning.

To be honest I do not have any professional experience tutoring. I graduated from Ohio University in 1978 with a BS in Education. I went on to earn a Masters degree in Educational Administration. I hold two valid permanent teaching certificates and a professional license. I have been fortunate to have taught all grades and all subjects with the exception of 1st, 3rd, and 4th. I have also had the pleasure of being an ABLE instructor for adults. I am currently teaching high school, however have been offered a 4th grade position in math and science. I received my BS degree with the intent of gaining a MA in teaching. While I was obtaining my MA, I performed as a substitute teacher in several school districts. I enjoy teaching adults as well as high school students. I do not have much training teaching below junior high; however, I am confident that I could successfully teach math or language. Although, I don't mind the traditional classroom setting, I am quite used to instructing on a one-to-one basis. Our GED programs are completely individualized for learners to move at their own pace, and I encourage this type of teaching style when manageable. Many of the students/adults that I have worked with have a learning disability of some sort, but I feel that I learn from each student just as much as they are learning from me. A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated from college with certification to teach grades 1-12. Do to the job market at that time, I was unable to get a full time teaching job. I substituted and then tutored for 2 years. I then worked various jobs working with the public. Although much of work experience is not in the teaching field, I have worked with people in many ways to reach their full potential and can relate to them on a level that they will comprehend.
I believe in using a multi- modality approach to teaching. The more senses involved, the more likely one will remember. I love working with children, and feel that I can relate to them because I struggled in my early school years. Biology is a subject that unfortunately can get pretty dense and requires an amount of memorization. However, it is a subject that builds upon itself, so if you understand the big picture of a given topic in biology, it’s easier to expand from there. Thus, I prefer to start with the big picture first, then build from there. When possible, I like to use real-world examples so the student can see the biology principles they’re learning at work. While meeting with a student, I like to assist the student in developing their answers, not just giving them answers though sometimes that’s necessary.
