I graduated from East Carolina University with a B.S. in Elementary Education (K-6) as well as Reading Certification (K-12). I did an internship in 1st grade as well as taught some in 2nd and 3rd grade. I know that each child is different and that I must differentiate my teaching methods in order to reach all children. I love learning new and creative ways to teach content to children and trying to make learning as engaging and meaningful as possible for all. I use a variety of teaching styles and methods to reach students because I know that all students are different and learn better with different methods. I have taught special education since August of 1989. I began at Dunn Middle School with a mildly mentally handicapped self-contained class. After three years I taught for one year at Clayton Primary in a multi-handicapped class. I then transferred to Four Oaks Middle School in 1993 where I continue to teach. The first year there I taught a self-contained mentally handicapped class, and since then I have taught through the inclusion model. Through co-teaching I work with the regular education teachers in grades six, seven and eight in the areas of math and language arts. This has been a very rewarding experience as I have watched the self-esteems of all students, regular and special education students thrive and experience success.
