I like to involve the students in exercises instead of passively instruct. I prefer to relate lessons to things that are happening in real life, or issues that conjure significant emotion or stimulate debate. Good creative writing is all about the ability to transfer strong feelings from the writer to the reader. To make them feel what you feel or felt.
I taught Communications 101 to 20 "lifers" at San Quentin Prison as part of the Prison University Project. Some of these men had not been in a classroom in 20 years. I began to help other with academics as early as the third grade, however I began to commit to tutoring in High School and continue it through-out college, in hopes to eventually becoming a teacher in the future.
I believe anyone can teach a subject, having enough knowledge of a subject allows one to pass it on. However, I feel what many teachers do not do is teach students how to learn.
