My approach is to help the student understand what each problem requires and to devise a “plan of attack” to solve the problem. I try to help the student avoid the notion that “every problem is a new problem,” but instead to look for patterns and similarities to problems they have already successfully solved. I also encourage the student to keep working on basic arithmetic skills and to work review problems from previous units in order to sharpen their techniques. My favorite part of tutoring is working with children who are frustrated with a subject and being able to break it down and teach it to them in a way that they can relate to. Also, the self-confidence the student gets that comes from being prepared for a test is very important.

A Little Bit About Me...

Use of teaching materials is very important in my teaching. There are methods for teaching children to read and to do math that use materials sold by companies. One way to find out about teaching materials to use is to ask people who have home schooled.
I started substitute teaching in September 2001 in the Greenville County School District in Greenville, South Carolina. The Greenville County School District uses a computer system to contact teachers to substitute in schools which starts calling substitute teachers at 5:30am on the school day. I taught K-12 all subjects and special ed. In September through December 2005 I substituted at Duncan Elementry School in Duncan, South Carolina K-3rd grade. January through June 2006 I substitute taught at Easley High School in Easley, South Carolina all classes.
