Creative Writing is one of my top subjects!

Teaching with compassion for the learner is my style of teaching. Making students understand their abilities and not dwell on any weaknesses are important for learning. I take ESL students at their level and help them make progress that is relevant to their lives.
I have taught (intermittently) college level English for 20 years. I have also taught ESL in public schools for 8 years. I now tutor on my own time any age level and anything related to English---including helping people finish memoirs or other books/novels. My personal style of learning is to learn by doing. I get my students involved in any process and get them to actually do the work so they learn it from experience, not just reading about it and taking for granted they know what is going on. Before I start tuoring a child, I like to get know them first. I think it's important to build trust with a child before jumping in and telling them what to do. A child will be more likely to accept help from someone they know rather than a total stanger. I like to make learning fun.
At Birmingham-Southern College, I was the News Editor for the college newspaper for two years. In addition, I have a minor in Journalism. I love to write and I feel that this is one of my strong points. I also tutor two young girls every Wednesday afternoon at Girls, Inc. of Central Alabama.
