I believe that each and every student has an ability to learn and it is necessary to find a method of teaching conducive to the individual. For example, I was a student that learned though hands on activities and writing. Having a teacher stand and lecture never appealed to me. Other children, and adults, may be more apt to retain through reading or repetition. I have always loved working with young people and helping them achieve their potential. I have worked with mainstream and honors students to behavior disorder and severely cognitively impaired youth. I believe there are no throw-away kids and that given the right environment and opportunities, all students can learn. I always have to assess what my students don't know. I have to create a method of teaching the information to them that they can relate to. After I teach I always ask myself, "What have they learned? How do I know that they have learned it?" I am genuinely rewarded when I see a student succeed. I also understand that our education system is largely driven my standardized tests.
