My comments on tutoring Journalism : AP English / Literature / Composition student.

I am ranked 12 ou of 496 in my class. I am an Honors and AP college student. I have a 4.83 grade point average. I take eight classes a day from 5:50am - 3:00pm. I am a voluntary tutor for students after school and I have been successfully doing that for a year now. I love working with studens and I get along with all of them because they are usually around my age as well.

My comments on tutoring Journalism : I have a Journalism Degree from Iowa State University. I like to find the lead (most newsworthy point) to begin the story, make it clear and concise, and make it as complete and unbiased as possible.

Very informal and conversational. I like to laugh and joke as well as understand things that are challenging, to both pupil and teacher. Repetition with interesting variation, coming at a problem from different angles solidifies concepts and ideas in our heads.
I have a B.S. in Technical Journalism from Iowa State University. I worked on a sales magazine upon graduating until I was drafted into the armed forces, spending four years as a Navy Electronics Technician. On the G.I. Bill I did Television Production coursework at College of San Mateo and entered the Broadcast TV Graduate Program at San Francisco State. I did not complete my Master's degree, but my training and contacts made there led to a 35-year career in television and video editing.

I have been in the field of education for approximately 14 years of which the last 8 years have been special education. I have worked with students of all ages, on all skill levels and many with learning disabilities through 8th grade. I was a high school art teacher for two years and I worked in a college library for four years. I am able and willing to work with students of all ages. Writing and reading has always been a constant in my life. I've worked as a writer for two magazines (in India) and have helped edit many papers and articles for non-profit organizations. For the past ten years I have worked for a non-profit organization as Staff Writer and Programs Officer and I had to use my writing skills to generate reports, proposals etc. While working full-time I was able to write two books of poetry (published by Apogee Press in Berkeley, CA) and I have just finished a non-fiction book. I enjoy helping young children discover the world of words and what is made with them.

What makes me a successful mentor is my ability to relate to people and find a common ground upon which to build a relationship. I believe strongly in establishing a relationship with all students because this fosters encouragement and confidence, which undoubtedly begins to show in their work. At almost all of my initial meetings, students want to schedule their next meeting with me immediately. I see this as a testament to my tutoring style.
