I have spent most of my formative and adult years learning, and then helping others to learn from the knowledge I have gained. My first job at age 15 was working in a computer assistance program which helped children and adults with severe disabilities become proficient with computer technology. Later I was promoted to both train new hires and outreach students, as well as manage and train fellow employees in the technology used in the workplace. My first tutoring experience actually began when I was a high school senior and tutored ESL students at South High School. Since then I have worked in a summer program tutoring elementary ESL students, gone on to graduate with degrees in English and Environmental Studies, and most recently, worked as an Americorps member at Andersen Elementary and Open in Minneapolis. My primary role at Andersen was tutoring elementary students (mostly 5th grade) in math and reading. I also have some experience in teaching ecology at a couple of environmental learning centers. I enjoy teaching children of all ages. Being a tutor and substitute teacher has provided me the opportunity to see so much growth and potential that children have. Wanting to teach is the major reason I got my PhD. I've always had a love of learning, and want to be able to share that with students. It is important to understand that all students are different and no one approach will work for all students. In my experience teaching both as a lecturer and on an individual basis, when dealing with a student one-on-one, the student and the tutor need to be equal partners in the session.
