I've been informally teaching for around 7 years, starting with private percussion lessons and high school drumline instruction and most recently tutoring through the Migrant Education Program in the subject areas of English as a Second Language, math, science, and Spanish. I am a current Geography Teacher Education student at Illinois State University minoring in Spanish. I will receive my license after completing my student teaching requirement in the spring of 2015.
I propone an exploratory, learn-by-doing philosophy regarding education; I believe that students are best served producing their own inquiries (guided by an educator), and then seeking resolution through gathering information. Everyone has something to add, especially in the classroom, and should not be overlooked. Linda Albert's model of "Cooperative Discipline" first began to intrigue me when I was introduced to her model in on of my Education courses. I agree whole-heartedly in her approach, which is based around the idea that helping students feel capable and connected will encourage them to contribute to their class and be successful. I find that my aspiration to be a teacher grows stronger through the knowledge that I have the ability to make students feel capable and connected. Every student has something valuable to contribute to the classroom. They may just need a little nudging in order to make that discovery.
