I have found teaching to be the most fulfilling and challenging experience of my life thus far. Each classroom environment and student is dynamic and different. I am not a professional teacher, but I played one in newsrooms at several newspapers. During a span of 20 years as reporter, sports writer, copy editor, section editor and editor-in-chief, I trained many new hires -- and even a few veterans -- in spelling, grammar, punctuation, comprehension of written material and in writing. I did not take graduate classes, but I did take the Graduate Record Exam. I scored in the upper 15% in both Verbal and Essay. I do not consider myself a classically trained scholar or academic. My knowledge comes from practical experience and in knowing study approaches in advance of taking standardized test.
