My teaching style starts with finding out what the student knows and what is the best way they learn. Not everyone learns the same way and it is hard for students to ask for help. What I find to be the most successful in teaching and mentoring is to learn more about the student and use real life examples that interest them to teach them the material that they need to learn. Also, reading their cues on when they are bored and need more of a challenge, or are in need of me slowing down and more of a review is also important. I have a very hands-on approach, using real life examples that children will understand. For example, if there's a math problem involving subtraction, I would use Cheerios cereal or coins. I would say something like "Let's say I gave you 20 Cheerios and took away 5 of them, how may Cheerios would you have left?" I believe that we all learn in different ways and it just takes patience and observation to understand the ways in which each child learns. I know that children can reach their full potential if they are given the chance to prove themselves and if they are surrounded by people who believe in them.
