I specifically enjoy helping with homework or test prep, where the student has specific problems to work through. Otherwise, I can explain basic concepts and give practice problems to work through. I really like to work through a lot of examples because without practice it can be difficult to apply.
I will receive my bachelors degree in mathematics from Purdue University in May 2012; however I began my college career in math education so I have taken many methods/teaching courses. While attending Danville Area Community College from 2003 to 2005, I tutored middle school and high school students through a program called AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination). After transferring to Eastern Illinois University, I began my pursuit of a teaching certificate in secondary education with my concentration in mathematics. While at EIU, I had many experiences teaching in a classroom setting. I also occasionally tutored high school and college students in both physics and math. After graduating with my Bachelors degree in mathematics, I tutored for a year at the college level.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching and working with children and adults alike. Everyone can learn; it is up to the teachers to find out how their students learn best. I was 14 years old when my younger brother was born, so I had the wonderful opportunity to learn firsthand that teaching requires a great deal of patience, knowledge, and flexibility. My goal in teaching is to maximize efficiency -- find out how the student learns best and tailor the teaching materials to meet his or her needs.
My pre-medical school coursework allowed me to gain conceptual and hands-on understanding in the areas of inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, and biology. More About This Tutor...

Throughout my tutoring experience, I noticed oftentimes, students wouldn’t be able completely grasp the concepts the first time when I explained to them. To resolve this problem, I have learned that it is helpful to explain the process of solving the same problem from a different perspective or using a different method. Also, sometimes after I explain a problem to the student, to make sure that the student really understands the concept, I ask the student to explain the same problem back to me or to another student who is also confused about the same problem. As a tutor, I am patient, strict, considerate and I strive to make a difference in all of my students' lives.

I am a very laid-back, out going person but I never stray from the main goal at hand. I strive to help educate children the best way possible, and would like to make a difference in their life. My education growing up was very positive, and going to a smaller school enabled me to have one on one contact with my educators. I hope to allow the child to feel comfortable with me as a tutor and build a relationship that makes them feel like they are an individual, not a number.
As a recreation major, I have held a number of jobs working with children of all ages. My first job as a lifeguard and swim instructor helped me understand how to work with children ages three to fifteen and really get a feel for how their brains operate and the proper learning styles to use for each age. Moving on to my job as a camp counselor and staff member at 4-H Memorial Camp in Monticello I really started ... read more

Sometimes I am dealing with a University professor and sometimes someone who never went to high school. My ability to translate my knowledge in different ways to different walks of life will be beneficial to anyone that I am helping learn.
