I have worked with children in the public school system for thirty-four years as a classroom teacher, Title I augmented reading teacher and as a media specialist. Largely due to my years experience as a reading teacher my class of inner city children scored in the top one percentile on the Georgia Criterion Reference Test(GA CRCT) in Reading. I have always felt that if you give a child the wings to fly via reading and life long love of learning they can achieve whatever they desire in life, and I think I have been quite successful in this area.

I tutored for Mission: Mentor while I attended Georgia State Universtity for 3 years. I was awarded Mentor of the Year in 2006 at Georgia State University. When I continued my education at Augusta State University, I volunteered as a mentor at the ASU Literacy Center helping children of all ages.
I love teaching children. For the younger children, I tend to be more hands on with projects and objects to help them learn. I also believe visual aids are very good. For middle school children learning math and English, I feel like giving them lots of practice problems and going over it together really seems to help. For students in high school it usually depends on the kid. By this age most of them have discovered if they are visual, kinetic, or auditory learners. Based on the type of learner they are , I like to adjust my teaching style.

As I approach my college graduation, I have realized how fortunate I am to have been given the opportunity to attend college. I understood the importance of understanding math in life early on and my Finance degree only validated that notion. Early this year, I began tutoring advanced math to middle school kids and found it to be a rejuvenating to see young minds eagerly waiting to be academically challenged.
During my course as a math tutor, I’ve found one on one tutoring to be most effective. Each child presented different needs and was receptive to different teaching methods, so I would meet with them individually. I believe each child is just as likely to succeed as the next one, and as a tutor, it is my job to encourage and instill confidence in them.

Every teacher must recognize that individuals learn at their own pace. I try to begin at a pace that the student feels comfortable with while gradually challenging them to improve their performance. My technical background makes me a very visual person. I like to incorporate that in my instruction, using visual aides and examples. Placing student of varying levels together will aide the learning process. My three-step guide is learn—teach—perform. I have expertise in teaching reading and math from infancy to grade 8. I have successfully tutored college math and English. I have taught 6th, 1st, 4th and 2nd grade in SC and GA public schools. I have taught in a private school specializing in students with learning disabilities, dyslexia, ADD, ADHD, and autism. In 1999, I developed and operated my own private tutoring service in Charleston, SC. My students consistently meet or exceed standardized test (CRCT) expectations.
