My comments on tutoring ACT : Verbal only

Over twenty years success in teaching, including homeschooling my own four children, has made me an exceptional tutor. I love children, care about their lives and academic progress, and have the experience of classroom teaching to help me relate to students' needs. I am equally at home in the classroom, in groups, in person one-on-one and online.
Caring, concerned, earnest, fun, relaxed

Education, teaching in particular, gives individuals the opportunity to give back what they have received. It is communication on a broader level than just simply putting forth information to whomever chooses to accept it. I started my career in education before I set foot on a college campus, through a peer-tutoring program in my high school. This experience allowed me to work with severely disabled peers learning functional skills for independence. Since then I have worked as an aide in emotional/behavior and multiple-disability middle school classrooms, as well as LD-resource, ED self contained and SC occupational diploma program. In addition I have earned a degree of distinction with the National Forensic League, been name a scholar-athlete in South Carolina and a host of other accolades in scholarship. I have experienced both urban and suburban school settings and have had inc ... read more

Although I have been self employed for the last 6 years, I went back to school last year to add Science and Math for middle school to my certification. I passed the Praxis for both of those subjects spring of 2010. I was not able to get a full time teaching position this year. I went back to working for myself but would love to tutor. I have tutored for 3 years while I worked for Tryon Elementary school. I had great success with the students I worked with, in particular concerning math. I am very qualified to work in a tutoring capacity.
I believe in good classroom management and organized lesson plans. I set appropriate boundaries and expect the students to follow the rules that are set before them. That being said I try to make the learning as fun as possible but organized. I also try to bring in anything that they are interested in to make them enjoy the subject they are ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is one where I combine the approach that best suits the individual’s personal learning style with proven sound educational best practices. I have had successes with motivating students who usually do not like to read. I have been able to help them by meeting them where they are and then helping them to formulate and meet their own goals. I have high expectations of students; however, those expectations are tempered with a realistic assessment of what the student is actually capable of achieving. I find oftentimes that students are capable of doing a great deal more than they thought they could originally.
I am a knowledgeable, experienced and well-trained educator. Students appreciate me because I am firm but fair and down to earth. Co-workers and administrators have described me as caring and creative. I have become highly effective in teaching strategies ... read more

Use of teaching materials is very important in my teaching. There are methods for teaching children to read and to do math that use materials sold by companies. One way to find out about teaching materials to use is to ask people who have home schooled.

I absolutely enjoy working with students of all ages. I place a high value on education because there is no replacement for this key component in a student’s quest for success. I have several years experience as a volunteer coach and understand all too well the delicate balance that exists between teaching, encouragement and constructive analysis. I am a hands-on teacher and firmly believe that clear instructions unified with connected repetition are vital for material comprehension. All students can not only meet, but exceed their academic expectations when given the right tools combined with positive reinforcement

Since each individual's learning style is different, I feel that it's important to observe and listen before taking any action. Defining specific short and long term goals is equally important in developing an effective learning plan. I love working with all children. I believe all children have the capability to learn math and put it to use in everyday life, but in a variety of methods and understandings. I like the elementary range of math because I can use all the math knowledge I have acquired through my own education. I am available to help each child find academic success no matter what exceptions they bring to the table. I am a firm believer in teaching through discovery and in a constructivist approach to learning. I do know that appropriate surroundings and learning experiences can help all children meet their potential. My job is to enhance learning beyond the classroom, yet take the classroom teachers skills and expand on them to benefit your child.

After working with adults and my peers in Boston, I've come to appreciate how rewarding teaching is. I believe that not all students learn the same way and thus aim to be as flexible as possible with each new pupil in order for them to get the most out of our time together. This may include physical expressions of a concept, pictures, or well-organized notes gone over orally. People learn well through positive reinforcement and helping children feel good about themselves while learning will not only provide a strong foundation for self-esteem, but also promote a positive connection with knowledge for years to come. I hope to help shape the future generations to be as aware about the world as they can.
Through the experience of pursuing my degree at Boston University, I was exposed to many different styles of learning and teaching due to my interdisciplinary concentration in Latin A ... read more
