Howard Gardner's teaching philosophy aligns with my teaching style. He believes there are multiple intelligences. Therefore, some students learn best with movement or art or hands-on activities and some are very logical and so on. As a teacher, I try to incorporate various intelligences into my lessons in order to meet a wide spectrum of educational needs. However, as a tutor, it is important for me to get to know the individual student in order to capitalize on his/her intellectual strengths and improve his/her weaknesses through using activities and methods which correspond. Hi! My name is Monica, and I am a recent graduate from the University of Oregon. I have both a Bachelor's degree in Japanese and Psychology. I have traveled to Japan for several months at a time and have taught English to elementary age Japanese children as well. I also have years of tutoring experience at the University of Oregon. In addition to providing help, I will also teach your student some important study skills regardless of the subject that he/she is studying. I personally believe in studying with the purpose of applying the subject in the real world, and will work with your student to develop a solid purpose for the material, as well as help him/her see how to apply the material. I taught high school English, journalism and speech for more than 30 years before retiring in 2013. I also taught a year in middle school, a year in community college and worked in administrative positions at the elementary, middle school and high school levels. I have worked with students at all levels, from remedial to advanced placement and worked in an alternative high school setting. I have received training in the scoring of advanced placement literature exams and am a published writer. I also have taught SAT prep classes. I like to get to know my students and build a strong relationship with each one. I work to connect the subject matter to their lives and to the real world. I set high standards, but understand that each student will work toward those standards at his or her own pace and in his or her own style.
