My most recent department chair, Dr. Marie Jureit called me the best teacher on campus. I've taught and tutored students for 37 years in music theory and composition, music of Africa and Latin America, and mathematics through college freshman algebra. I was a community college English teacher for 12 years at Vista Community College in Berkeley, CA (now Berkeley City College). I taught in a special program tailored to working adults who had returned to school in order to earn their Associate of Arts degrees. This was not an academically confident population. They required enormous encouragement, personal attention, and coaching. I was very successful in this position because I was willing to talk with students on the phone, meet with them after class, and even respond to their essays at length on cassette tapes--my own idea!
