A Little Bit About Me...

As an adjunct faculty member at Brigham Young University Idaho since 1995 (it was then Ricks College), I have taught human nutrition, nutrition and the young child, introduction to foods, nutrition for the culinary arts majors, and various classes for the dietetic technician program. I earned my Dietetics degree in 1985 and have practiced as a Registered Dietitian since then. I have worked in clinical settings including hospitals, long term care, assisted living homes and fitness centers. I am a partner in the Idaho Plate Method LLC business, which created a diabetes education tool sold throughout the United States.

I am currently a student at Brigham Young University - Idaho where I am pursuing a degree in Biology with minors in Child Studies and Chemistry. This rigorous program has taught me the importance of fulfilling one's potential, the vitality of good study habits, as well as giving me an understanding of children and adolescents. The past two years I have participated in a youth summer program for high school-aged students. I was responsible for giving both formal and informal instruction in leadership skills, self-esteem, and religion. I've gained experience with teaching in an array of ways. Firstly, I'm a recent graduate from BYU-Idaho in Piano Performance earning my Bachelor of Musical Arts. Throughout my training as a professional pianist I studied piano pedagogy and now have a functioning piano studio of my own. I believe in the Socratic Method. Through this tutoring method, the student is asked questions to help them develop understanding on their own. Through this discovery style, the students actually learn in ways that will be remembered most. If they are willing, and if they are taught correctly, every child can learn. No two children are the same, and should not be taught as such. There are so many different ways to teach and understand a concept, and I try to search out the technique that best fits a child in need. I am a firm believer that there is nothing we “can’t do” if we are taught in such a way that we can truly understand. To turn on the light, you must simply find the right switch.
