I have been a substitute instructional assistant for the severely handicapped for the past six months. I have had a chance to help teach kids from the ages of 5 to 21, with all different types of diseases. I believe that every student, no matter what the situation,can learn with a little extra help. I offer a tailored approach to each student, establishing the particular areas of strength and weakness. I aim to establish or reestablish interest in math and also to teach exam techniques. My tutoring is to focus and prior knowledge and to reinforce new information to the student. My style of tutoring is skills-focused, with a goal of student independence. I am patient and work to facilitate a student’s ability to do the work herself, by giving her strategies for navigating her own work, and helping her to see, or mentally organize, reading and writing in new ways. Positive encouragement and building self-confidence are always important to me.
