Genetics is one of my top subjects!

I was a teaching assistant at North Georgia College and State University for three years. I assisted with laboratory sections of biology courses and taught them in the event of a professors absence. I provided department funded tutoring services during that time as well. I have taken the GRE and Biology Section of the GRE and received excellent scores on both tests in only one sitting. I have also coached 4H horse quiz bowl and horse judging teams for several years working with elementary and middle school age children.

I do have a preferred teaching style, but I will accommodate the student’s preferences. My preferred teaching style is to guide students, not lecture or do their homework for them. Your ability to learn material will be greatly increased by exposure to critical decision making steps as you work problems. I will guide students to these steps as efficiently as possible and wait for a rigorous effort from the student. This will result in either a correct approach or an inappropriate or incorrect approach. After that point I then congratulate the student for a correct answer, or thank them for their effort and try to break down the decision making process so that they can learn from the experience and gain a real understanding of the problem.

A Little Bit About Me...

While enrolled in Anatomy and Physiology, my professor asked if I would be interested in becoming a tutor in the class. At that moment, I felt both a strong desire to help others and the fear of letting others down. I accepted the tutoring position because my passion for learning and helping others won out. I have had several opportunities over the last few years to help my co-workers with their adult education and not only am I able to help, they always return to me when they need more help.
I try to use as many resources as are available. What I mean is, in the Anatomy and Physiology labs there were models available to look at. I’ve used molecular models in Organic Chemistry for chemical structure. Sometimes asking a question can start the process of learning. A lot of it depends on the subject matter and the student involved. I try to remain open in my efforts to help others.

I loved the subject of biology at a very early age. However, it was my educators in high school and college that helped guide me towards a career in biology. As an undergraduate laboratory instructor, I found that one of my strengths included passing on difficult knowledge in an easy to understand way. Teaching an introductory to biology laboratory helped me gain new approaches to instruction because all of the students were non-biology majors and did not have a background in science. My goal as an instructor is to make the sciences a fun learning experience, and one that it is easily understood.

I have a bachelors degree in chemistry and took graduate level biochemistry classes for three years. I have taught general chemistry both as an undergraduate and a graduate student. I have two years of teaching experience, including teaching middle school sceinece, high school biology, chemistry and physics at a private school. In my spare time I like to write fiction, so in addition to writing on technical subjects, I have experience with creative writing.
