I have worked with different levels of mental health and emotional maturity for several years. I have spent much of my spare time working within the community at youth centers, soup kitchens and veteran administration homes. I feel that working with many different types and levels of human functioning has enabled me to be more able to adjust my teaching and assisting styles to better serve my community.

I believe that learning comes from a good rapport between teacher and student. I like to make students feel at ease, and then progress is achieved in the context of a safe learning environment. Rather than taking an authoritarian approach, I prefer to act as a kindly mentor and facilitator of students' learning processes. I have found that children are very comfortable with me, which makes the learning process flow more smoothly. I was trained to discover the problems that prevent children from learning to read and absorb written material. Children learn in different ways, and I try to individualize my teaching methods to suit the individual child.
After earning my teaching degree in English, I gained some middle school and high school teaching experience, then took a different path for some years. While earning my master's degree in reading education, I gained experience by helping teach children at Western Carolina University's reading clinic in Asheville.
