Marine Biology is one of my top subjects!

I think science is fun and exciting. I like to teach with a hands on approach.
I have worked in the aquarium industry for 19years. I have indepth knowledge, practical skills related to the marine science field. I grew up in a VA suburb of Washington, DC and spent my summers and holidays from college as a page, intern, and tour guide in the US Capitol. I believe that science has a undeserved reputation for difficulty as a subject that is directly related to the inability of many teachers to "break it down". Science can seem to be like a foreign language to the uninitiated, but at its essence science is simply a way of thinking about the world and asking questions. Several themes appear again and again in concepts that on the surface may seem unrelated and it is recognizing these themes that is the key to success in building knowledge and confidence. In general, if I am teaching a certain topic, I will first ask students a few questions on the topic in order to identify the level of their familiarity. This enable the student(s) to build on transferable skills as well as recover knowledge stored in memory. After that,I will give an overview of the topic. For example, if my topic is atom, students will be told the word "atom" is associated with elements along with other facts. Next, I would give the students oral/written questions to ascertain their principal learning styles in order to modify my teaching style for optimum learning.
