I am currently student teaching as an English as a Second Language teacher through the Masters program at Hamline University and will be applying for my teaching license in March, 2010. I have extensive experience working with non-native English speakers both inside and outside the classroom. A Little Bit About Me...

I began teaching at a very young age. I began my own music lesson company which taught basic level of piano, guitar, saxophone and voice lessons out of my house before I began high school. After achieving my certificate of proficiency in Spanish from Hamline I then began to also privately tutor Spanish. I also have earned my TEFL/TESOL certificate and will eventually go abroad and teach English overseas.
I have worked mainly with children, but enjoy teaching all ages. I tend to take a systematic approach and keep my lessons structured. I like to have students keep some sort of record of their practice time, as well as their progress. A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy teaching students of all ages, individually or in groups. I find the Socratic method most useful, and with children this translates into making the subject (i.e. German grammar) seem like a puzzle that, with some effort, can be solved. I think students are best served when they can discover these answers for themselves.
I have a BA in English and a Master's and Ph.D. in German (Germanic Linguistics). With grammar and mechanics, I have found that a directive manner is often the best approach; sometimes, however, students require clarification of ideas and organization, in which case I pose questions and share observations, rather than instruct. I really do place something of a premium on being able to connect with all of my students on an academic and personal level. I can attest to such things happening with many of my students and for that I am incredibly thankful.
