My comments on tutoring Physics : I recently tutored high school Physics. In less than a month my student had made a lot of progress in understanding concepts that he struggled with before. Physics is a subject that builds upon previously learned concepts, so it was pivotal for him to understand those building blocks. I also excelled in my own college Physics course and really enjoyed teaching it.

I try to get my students to find the answer for themselves by asking them questions. Students need to come to an understanding of their material and that won't happen if I continually give them the answers. I'm also very patient with my students. If they don't grasp a concept or topic that we're working on, I will continue to explain it to them in different ways until it makes sense.
I have been tutoring students for about 5 years. I started when I was a junior in high school. My first experiences tutoring were through the National Honor Society. I volunteered after school once or twice per week and I tutored mainly ESL students in Math and English. My senior year of high school and throughout the time I was in college, I tutored a high school student who had educational and developmental deficits. I prefer an interactive teaching style where the student determines how much they get out of it. I generally will not give a student an answer but will help them along until they can answer the question for themselves, thus making them more independent learners.
As a tutor, I primarily held 1 on 1 appointments several days a week. I primarily tutored in all levels of chemistry from general to biochem and I also tutored in accounting due to the introductory course that I had. My work as a supplemental instructor was by far the most rewarding. My job was to attend the Nursing Chemistry lectures and to take notes and create my own worksheets based on the material. Education has to be interactive to be effective. I try to apply a Socratic approach when I work with students - to not provide answers but to draw out answers from the student by directed questioning. In the areas that I am competent in (physics into the undergraduate levels, and mathematics through the calculus level), I believe that understanding principles is what enables success. These fields require the development of physical and numerical intuition and pure memorization of facts is rarely successful. Such intuition is acquired through problem solving in conjunction with discussion of the topic.
