Need a good Math tutor? Look no further!

I have been a tutor since high school. In HS I tutored for ESL (English as a Second Language). More recently I have been a Math tutor at Augsburg College. I am proficient in the subjects ranging from pre-algebra to calculus 3. I am pretty good with statistics and logic (Discrete Math) as well. I also have experience teaching younger children as well. It is my hope that by helping other people with Math they will learn to like it as much as I do.

I believe each student is a unique individual. Therefor I handle each student situation differently. The first step is to assess a student capabilities and areas of deficiency or needs and design a process to arrive at the expected level of proficiency. Discipline is an essential tool to successfully master anything. I display discipline and will expect same from my students.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe in using the Socratic method. This method is a powerful tutoring device because it allows students to come up with the answers on their own. This is key to developing a full understanding of the material.
I am a sophomore at Washington University in St. Louis studying biomedical engineering. I am a former Princeton Review ACT Teacher. This job taught me how to use the Socratic method to help students discover how to solve problems on their own. I used this experience as an ACT teacher to perfect my tutoring skills. I am currently a Math Mentor for Washington University students. I am looking to expand my tutoring opportunities.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching experience began during high school when I would help out at my church's Sunday School providing remedial services like handing out papers. Since then I have earned a bachelor's degree in finance and economics with ambitions to earn a PhD. During my undergraduate experience I tutored beginning accounting students for a couple hours a week aside from the usual work of helping classmates. Upon graduation I began looking other ways to continue teaching. About 10 months ago I began volunteering at a community center. There I partnered with another gentleman to teach English as a language to immigrants. It was so much that I decided to make this a weekly ritual. Currently, I am an Office Manager for a small construction company
As cliché as this sounds - my favorite part of teaching is the satisfaction of knowing I made a difference. I have interacted with individuals ... read more

I believe that every person has an optimal way in which they learn. Ideas that seem complicated can be made easy by simply changing the way in which it is presented. As a teacher it is important for me recognize how my students best learn and use that to present material. I also believe that students need to feel comfortable with their teachers. That is why I make an effort to get to know my students on a personal level. Knowing the things that are important to them helps to make a connection and can motivate them to learn.
I have always had a passion for helping others learn. In high school I tutored students from different schools in math. After graduating with two bachelor's degrees from the University of Minnesota I began working full time as a financial analyst for Target Corporation. At the same time, I started teaching part time at a learning center. In the past three ye ... read more

I love helping people learn. I belive that everyone can learn something new its just a matter of if they want to or if they dont understand something taking a step back and asking for help. My goal is to help people understand what they are doing so that they can repeat it at a later time without any help.
I enjoyed helping my siblings with topics that they needed help with while going through school. I have earned my BA in Economics with a minor in Finance. I currently work as a financial advisor. This has enabled me to gain an understanding of many areas of math.

As a student I enjoyed school and learning and therefore went on after high school to obtain a B.S in Biology. I have always enjoyed science, math, and writing and enjoy helping others in these subjects as well as others. My first tutoring experience was tutoring underprivileged high school students weekly. I then began tutoring middle school and high school students weekly. Over the course of the school year, the children I tutored had improved a great deal in their courses and now had a positive outlook on learning. Tutoring is something I am passionate about as I enjoy providing encouragement and seeing each student progress throughout the school year not only in their academic work, but also in other areas of their life.
I believe that each child has their own special style of learning in which they succeed the best at. When I tutor students I take the time to get to kno ... read more

I worked in the Finance Industry (UBS Financial, and Wachovia securities). Also I have taught as an adjunct faculty in University of Saint Thomas, Metro State University, and various community colleges. I taught various economics, and finance classes. Also I taught developmental math to community college students. I have also taught my two children. My older son is graduating with degrees in Mathematics and Economics from University of Minnesota. My younger child is an eighth grader. He is doing pre-calculus in eighth grade. Pre-calculus is studied in eleventh or twelfth grade. I work with my younger son very closely. That gave me experience to teach and motivate a young child.
I believe in creating value to the learners. It is not enough to repeat, or write what is in a text book. The job of a teacher is to create interest of the students in the subject being learned. I use di ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

When in undergraduate school for physics I acted as a tutor for portions of my junior and senior years. I tutored students in general physics I & II, as well as calculus I & II. I would work with a particular student on a one on one basis to address specific questions that they might have on the subject matter.
I very much enjoy education and working with children/young adults. Teaching is something that can and should be performed in different ways depending on the student. Everybody has their own unique learning style. I believe in visual learning and working through example problems to help develop better understanding. I feel that through a hands on approach students can and will meet their potential.

I particularly enjoy working one on one with students. I like to show each student the reasons behind the formulas and procedures they are using, so they understand the “why” instead of just the “how”. I also like giving them alternate techniques of solving problems, using visual methods whenever possible. I believe every student is capable of doing math, but must find the approach which works best for them. My goal is to equip each learner with sufficient tools in their math inventory so they can be confident in their abilities.
As an AFROTC scholarship recipient, I completed a BS in Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics, which gave me a very strong foundation in math, particularly Calculus. I became a pilot for the Air Force and commercial aviation, in flight applying mathematical concepts on a daily basis. A Little Bit About Me...

As a teacher I have always desired to teach in a way that I know I am communicating with my students. My teaching style includes making eye contact with my students to make sure they are with me. If I sense that their eyes have "glazed over," it is time for a change of pace. I might interject some humor or tell a short story to give them a break. I know that learning is hard work. I would also use games and projects to give them a change of pace. Sometimes I would assign a lesson for them to teach. Taking classes on field trips as an occasional alternative to classroom teaching is another tool I use, giving my students a passive learning experience. I strive to make the learning experience enjoyable.
As a high school student, I began teaching Sunday School and continued throughout my college years. While stationed in the USAF in Alaska, I decided to pursue teaching as a car ... read more

I have long term subbed in life science and biology. I taught Summer school in reading, math and science. I have taught under contract math, general science, biology, chemistry, physics, math, and driver education.
I teach and assess alternately. I use audiovisual aids, reading, labs, and other activities. I start with the building blocks and add inquiry or higher order thinking. I use technology when it makes sense and older methods when they make sense. Reading is still valuable.

10 Years of teaching Math experience at the Junior High and Senior High level. I taught Basic Standards Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and ACT Test Prep. Through my Master's Coursework, I integrated the Cognitive Tutor which was a computer program that assisted with the thought process in problem solving. Through the 5 years that I used it, students' interest in Math had risen while still competing with traditional chalk board styles of teaching.
My teaching style is one of real life applications, fun, and making it understandable. For example, when discussing slope, we can study downhill skiing or rooftops. When solving equations, I approach it from unraveling a number trick. I prefer to coach students on how to approach problems, and design which questions to ask themselves, rather than memorizing a list of techniques whenever possible. My funny and ou ... read more
