Chess is one of my top subjects! I am a chess expert and experienced tournament player who has won state titles several times. I also have been teaching individuals and school chess clubs for over 20 years. Generally considered one of the best chess teachers in MN.

I am near master strength (expert USCF) with experience handling students of all ages. Had a US under 8 champion as well as MN state champions under my tutelage. As a teacher I have always desired to teach in a way that I know I am communicating with my students. My teaching style includes making eye contact with my students to make sure they are with me. If I sense that their eyes have "glazed over," it is time for a change of pace. I might interject some humor or tell a short story to give them a break. I know that learning is hard work. I would also use games and projects to give them a change of pace. Sometimes I would assign a lesson for them to teach. Taking classes on field trips as an occasional alternative to classroom teaching is another tool I use, giving my students a passive learning experience. When solving equations, I approach it from unraveling a number trick. One thing I have learned in my many years as a tutor is that each student is unique. I try to be flexible in my approach. With grammar and mechanics, I have found that a directive manner is often the best approach; sometimes, however, students require clarification of ideas and organization, in which case I pose questions and share observations, rather than instruct. With reading assignments, clarification of thesis, organization, and vocabulary are usually most helpful.
