A Little Bit About Me...

Most recently, I served as a short and long-term substitute in middle school Read 180 classes for Columbus City Schools. Read 180 is a course that strengthens reading skills. Prior to that, I worked as a tutor at Sylvan Learning Center. I facilitated tutoring sessions for small groups of students who presented various needs. I have, also, had the opportunity to teach at Columbus State Community College. There I had the privilege of providing instruction in three sections of a required English class. The goal for students was to produce a research paper written to persuade its audience. My first full-time teaching job, upon graduating from Ohio State, was as a middle and high school Language Arts teacher at a private school. I worked with students in grades six through nine. In addition, I was the first American Sign Language teacher and got the program underway.

I've worked with both high school and college students, both gifted and disadvantaged students, and I believe that the key to being a successful tutor is understanding your student and how he/she learns. Through my experiences, I've learned how to explain subject matter in a way that enables students to repeat back to me in their own words what I just explained. This is critical. I would to teach math because I have been applying math my entire life. I have a four year degree in mechanical engineering technology. I have used math extensively in my everyday job.
