I like to get to know my students and build a strong relationship with each one. I work to connect the subject matter to their lives and to the real world. I set high standards, but understand that each student will work toward those standards at his or her own pace and in his or her own style. I taught high school English, journalism and speech for more than 30 years before retiring in 2013. I also taught a year in middle school, a year in community college and worked in administrative positions at the elementary, middle school and high school levels. I have worked with students at all levels, from remedial to advanced placement and worked in an alternative high school setting. I have received training in the scoring of advanced placement literature exams and am a published writer. I also have taught SAT prep classes.

In addition to providing help, I will also teach your student some important study skills regardless of the subject that he/she is studying. I personally believe in studying with the purpose of applying the subject in the real world, and will work with your student to develop a solid purpose for the material, as well as help him/her see how to apply the material. In time, it is my goal that your student will be able to study on his/her own, without my help, and be able to fully comprehend and use the data. I have a background in study skills and educating others, as well as excellent communication skills and a lot of patience. I have done four years of math and chemistry (respectively) during high school, including elementary calculus and quantum mechanics. Hi! My name is Monica, and I am a recent graduate from the University of Oregon. I have both a Bachelor's degree in Japanese and Psychology. I have traveled to Japan for several months at a time and have taught English to elementary age Japanese children as well. I also have years of tutoring experience at the University of Oregon. I taught elementary school in the 4-J School District. I later returned to graduate school at Portland State University for an MA to teach English as a Second Language and taught ESL to immigrants at Lane Community College. While living in Montana for a few years, I taught phonics, reading, and math with small groups of children in the Title One program in the Eureka Public Schools. Most recently I taught English to international students at the American English Institute at the University of Oregon. I am very patient, encouraging, and supportive. I start with what students know and build from there, selecting appropriate materials to provide practice and continued learning.

I like to help individuals who truly want the help. I help my kids with their own homework and understand how difficult it maybe for other parents to help their children after working long hours.
