I want to help you communicate well - whatever your area

I graduated magna cum laude from Drury University, a private liberal arts college, in 1987, with a major in fine arts (photography and graphic design emphasis) and minor in communications (four years experience on the college newspaper). I also have 21 years of experience as an editor at weekly and daily newspapers in Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma. Working primarily at smaller newspapers, I have an extremely varied background of experiences - from writing "hard" news and features to on-the-job training for new reporters just out of college or new to the profession.
My teaching style is centered around working with an individual wherever they happen to be at. In college, I assisted other students in Drury's writing lab. And, as an editor and journalist, I have extensive skills in dealing with helping reporters to communicate clearly and succinctly.

I realize that learning reading and writing skills can be difficult. When I teach young people, I work to push each person patiently but constantly to improve with each lesson. Each person learns a little differently, and I like to learn the student’s strengths and weaknesses and work from there. I support hands-on learning. There is only so much a person can talk about writing. The best way to learn writing is to write. The best way to improve reading comprehension is to read. Reading unlocks vocabulary. And a good vocabulary helps in written and verbal communication. My passion for teaching these skills comes from my belief that they matter and that I’m helping someone with a skill that will help them succeed.
As an editor working with young writers and as a college professor teaching students, I have spent most of my adult life passing on writing, communication and reading ... read more

I believe teaching should be preparation for the real world outside of school. For that reason I strive to make all assignments relevant, meaningful, and useful to the students. I try to fuel motivation by making the assignments fun and purposeful. I hold students to a high standard as preparation for future jobs (no late work, no coming in to class late, etc.) I believe every student can be reached, but that all students are at different levels and require their own amount of one-on-one help, motivation, challenge, and dedication. It is my goal to help students become independent learners and to further their education to help them have the best future possible.
Since graduating from Missouri State in the fall of 2009 with my Bachelor's Degree in Spanish education I have been substituting with Sparta schools and Republic schools. I have also been tutoring a student in Spanis ... read more

More About This Tutor...

Over the last 4-6 years I've had to teach coworkers the intricacies of engine technology (basic hydrocarbon breakdown and nitrogen depleting systems) to basic geometry and electrical circuits ( from creating concentric bends in pipe to large scale automated systems). I have not taught english to an 11th grader in a public school, but I make it a fact to learn everyday and spread the knowledge to whomever i come into contact with and is willing to learn. I have recently been studying and implementing hydrogen generating systems and the effects of injecting it into internal combustion engines.
I believe teaching is best learned though practical examples (especially math). because I used to say the same thing that I'm sure that kids today are saying. When am i ever going to use this in my daily life? Its important to let them see the applications from knowing calculus based formulas t ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I do not have any direct experience teaching or professionally tutoring in English. However, I am very proud of my English skills, and I look for opportunities to help others develop theirs. I entered one year of tutoring experience because I believe that I have equivalent experience through assisting others with their class assignments or professional documents. I have considered the idea of taking additional classes to become certified to teach part-time. I received a 35 on the English section of the ACT, and I have excelled in my English courses. Throughout my college career, I have extended my knowledge in this area. I love teaching others what I know about the subject, and I believe I would thoroughly enjoy being a professional English tutor.
When I do teach others about English, I try to understand the way in which they learn. For example, if I were describing the usag ... read more

More About This Tutor...

Although I have only been teaching in a classroom setting for the last two semesters, I have spent a great deal of time teaching friends and fellow students over the years. I am very patient and able to adapt to the student with whom I am working. I am a firm believer that learning, and learning math especially, is not a spectator sport and that a great deal of practice is required to fully understand most material. I do my best to provide a helping hand with that practice.
Throughout high school and college, I performed at an academic level well above average. As a result, I often found myself helping my fellow students. As part of my graduate assistantship at Missouri State, I work in the math tutoring lab several hours a week, tutoring (primarily) algebra and calculus students. I also teach MTH 102, which is approximately equivalent to high school Algebra II. I also have a great ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have no teaching experience in the traditional sense. I have been working in the writing center at the University for the 2008-2009 school year. I have been able to assist several students with grammar and sentence structure issues. These issues include, but are not limited to, development of the thesis statement, parallel structure, and paper organization. I find it thrilling when I am able to help the students to transform a D paper into an A paper with a little guidance.
I have 20 years of experience as a nurse, I returned to college to pursue a career that involved writing. I am about to graduate this May with a BS in Professional Writing with a Biomedical Science minor. I have had classes in Scientific and Technical Editing in which I excelled. I have an eye for detail and am oftentimes referred to as a grammar Nazi. I love the language and I love to write. I am the go-to- g ... read more
