Student at Wellesley College

I taught English to low income Brazilian students in Sao Paulo Brazil's largest favela for 4 years in high school. Now, as a student at the accredited Wellesley College, I tutor young elementary aged pupils in reading and math. I received an International Baccalaureate Diploma in high school specializing in Biology, Mathematics, Visual Art, Critical Interpretation (English), and History. I also completed standard level Portuguese (as a fluent/native speaker). Prior to my tutoring and teaching experiences, I was also a babysitter for my neighborhood starting from the age of 10. I have taken babysitting classes during the summer, and from that have become certified by the American Red Cross. In addition to these formal opportunities, I have extensive experience volunteering for organizations such as the YMCA (teaching soccer camps and participating in the feeding programs), and Habitat for ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

With 7 years of international and U.S-based teaching, tutoring, and training experience, I am at ease teaching multiple subjects to individuals and entire classes. I have taught middle-grades Math, Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science, High School English, and reading and writing to adults. I also designed English and French curricula and lessons for my students in my Peace Corps service country of Palau. My many years living and working overseas have afforded me perspective on the world that comes in handy when working with students, as I am able to offer personal anecdotes and cultural knowledge about global matters to supplement their academic investigations.
With so many years teaching middle school students in classrooms, I specialize in crafting just the right learning environment for students, emotionally safe but a little push outside their intellectual comfort zone. ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

It is most important to communicate respect and find natural ways to empower each student so that they feel good about their ability to meet the goals ahead. I encourage critical thinking and often use picture and story associations to improve memory recall. It is important to me that your child is guided to discover the right answer rather than just giving them the answer in efforts to save time. As a result of this teaching style, it appears that I have a strength in helping students prepare for exams and several parents have asked me to home school their children and even volunteered to recruit more parents.
For over 20 years, I have had the opportunity to tutor children, peers and older adults in various subjects including math, English and science as well as guide them at presentation skills, critical thinking and small business solutions. As an undergraduate student, I ... read more

I hold a bachelor of science in Biology (cum laude) from Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA and attended graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine where I studied Molecular and Cell Biology and completed all coursework required of the Ph.D. Since graduate school, I have over 10 years of biology research experience in both academic and biotech settings. My research, teaching and training experience covers the entirety of essential topics in biology and chemistry. In addition, my solid oral and written communication skills, and excellent computer fluency are just a few of my relevant assets.
I believe that science has a undeserved reputation for difficulty as a subject that is directly related to the inability of many teachers to "break it down". Science can seem to be like a foreign language to the uninitiated, but at its essence science is simply a way of ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My German parents spoke (so-called "high", or proper) German at home in NY/NJ, which came in handy after we moved overseas when I was 13. Repeating 7th grade, I learned to read and write German fluently, as well as master the local dialects and sundry colloquialisms without a lingering accent. Doing so allowed me mask my heritage, enroll in higher education, and learn a trade, culminating in a long and rewarding all-encompassing painting career abroad and in the eastern US, before settling in Texas to explore telecommunications. I widely regard the world as a large classroom/laboratory.
My teaching style with my own children is conversational, hands-on, and intuitive. I explore what most captures their attention, then weave in the lessons by using any available teaching aids, such as whiteboard drawings, to illustrate a point, literally.

I have over 8 years of experience as an assistant trainer for AT&T training and coaching new hired employees and aggressively working with call center agents that were struggling in their day to day tasks as sales and customer service representatives. I went to trade school while in high school and studied Early Childhood Education where I had book work for half of the day and the other half of the day I worked as a Day Care Teacher with children from 6 weeks old to age 4.
I am very passionate about teaching and training. My goal is to make sure that the information that I am teaching is understood and I am committed to work with individuals until the information is understood. I am very patient and reliable.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am patient and a listener to needs described and help to anticipate and develop the skills displayed that show incomplete in being able to grasp completely the benifits of learning and moving toward being all they could be when care is afforded one-on-one. The difference is demonstrated when those AHA moments of discovery take place where their efforts become their own and application is the new found reward. Feedback is critical to allow the child to grow through the experience rather than demand as success breeds desire while forced communication will not serve or make long term difference in their awaited potential. Learning can be joyful and meaningful when shared and explored together.
Most of my background is in Management and Personnel training and development in transportation. I have taught children 2nd grade through 12th through church and am currently a church counse ... read more

My teaching style is based on the student’s learning style. Each child is different and may require different teaching methods to facilitate learning. Some children are more visual and may require more interactive exercises to learn. I do not believe in spoon-feeding information to children but taking the time to ensure that they fully grasped the concept of a problem and are able to think through a solution on their own. I will work to develop their critical thinking skills and will challenge them, so that they are not just passive learners but active participants in the cognitive process. I am patient and will work at the student’s pace encouraging him/her to give his/her best effort to the given task.
As an undergraduate student I was always in the top ten percentile of my math, chemistry and biology classes, and as a result, I tutored fellow college students in those respectiv ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I love teaching and engaging with people of all ages. Everyone learns in a different way, and it is kind of exciting to see how people think and try to connect with them. I believe that it is possible for anyone to learn; some people just have to take a different approach to get to their objective. I love the entire learning and teaching process, and I am pretty fond of people as well!
I can be helpful in math up through Algebra II, and have extensive knowledge of counseling, religious studies, writing, and have used accounting a bit in bookkeeping. I could tutor social studies up through high school because I have found such a great overlap between religion and counseling and human services. Right now I am in a class on trauma and presenting on human trafficking. I can tutor English in grammar and writing composition simply because of all the writing I have had to do for college. ... read more
