My 20+ year teaching career began in high school when I ran an after-school tutoring program. At the University of Georgia I tutored for the chemistry and biology departments. I earned a BS in Genetics and a Masters of Education. I taught biology, physical science, ecology, and human anatomy in 2 public high schools in Georgia. I have a bachelor degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry, which has allowed me to gain a deep understanding of both sciences. Because my background is in Science, I have a passion for teaching students in a hands-on, real life way! I think it's important for kids to have the opportunity to discover and then make connections to the world. I believe this type of learning helps children physically see how things work, which tends to make more sense to them, versus reading straight from a book or writing things down repeatedly. My teaching style is based on the student’s learning style. Each child is different and may require different teaching methods to facilitate learning. Some children are more visual and may require more interactive exercises to learn. I do not believe in spoon-feeding information to children but taking the time to ensure that they fully grasped the concept of a problem and are able to think through a solution on their own. I will work to develop their critical thinking skills and will challenge them, so that they are not just passive learners but active participants in the cognitive process.
