Experienced and Proactive Educator

I believe that competence and confidence are BOTH important in learning. Students bring their own knowledge and learning styles to the process. It is the teachers job not only to adapt instructional style to best support the learner, but also to help the student understand his or her own learning style and needs.
Experienced and New York State Certified teacher. I have over 10 years experience teaching students in grades 1-12 and 5 years experience teaching adults. I also have extensive tutoring experience. I have an MA from Marist College as well as a BA from NYU. I have designed and taught SAT prep classes (verbal/writing portion) as well as developing curriculum integrating diverse domains of knowledge to create a broad, deep and flexible learning experience for students.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have experience teaching and assisting children in Elementary School. I also have a BS degree in Biology and would love to tutor. I had a 3.0 GPA Undergraduate. I have worked in laboratories for the preious four years using my Biology degree in the Biomedical Field. I also worked as a Sitter in a hospital for a short time where I cared for disabled patients. I wasn't able to use my teaching skills but my caring and patient attitude helped with the position.
I like to connect with the children and really get them interested in the subject. I am laid back but I think I am really effective as a teacher/assistant.

Become a star, through dedication and desire to succeed!!

I love interacting with my students and finding out what drives them and what they feel hinders their success. I choose activities that make learning fun while making the information relevant and easy to understand. I also strive to build up a student's academic confidence. I believe all students can be successful in anything they put their mind to, sometimes it may take longer for the light bulb moment but I am willing to do anything I can to ensure they reach the point where they fully understand what they are learning and can apply their knowledge not just recite it.
I have taught in both suburban schools at the high school level and urban schools at the elementary/middle school level. While teaching I previously have tutored students. My main experience teaching has been various science courses but I have also taught math and reading. I began my education thinking I would b ... read more

My comments on tutoring Biology : I took both Honors Biology in ninth grade and AP Biology in twelfth grade. I received an A in both courses for my hard work and was in the top of my class both years. I mastered the basics from Honors in AP biology. One emphasis my teacher had was to be able to explain the concepts both in writing and verbally so I have become a very effective tutor in this subject area.

Teaching new concepts, practice applying the new material, review, and more practice of the material to solidify the concepts.
I have helped my classmates and have had one official student as of this summer. However, I have learned how to explain concepts so that students dont just memorize, they will gain a thought process and applicable knowledge that will enable them to solve even the most complex problems. Having this mentality of preparation and success will being them to reach their goals.

I have been fortunate to teach biology to undergraduates for nearly forty years. I am passionate about making sure my students not only excel in the courses they take, but are prepared for a world in which the biosciences (especially the molecular biology of the genome & DNA!)will form the basis of medicine, the pharmaceutical industry, and major technological breakthroughs in environmental science. While I'm dedicated to helping my students learn how to handle multiple choice and standardized tests, I'm also committed to making sure they can communicate their understanding in essay/term paper form. If they can't clearly express what they have learned, then they aren't likely to credited with the understanding they have achieved! I believe that teaching students how to write about biology is an integral part of my job, along with sharing joyfully in their curiosity (and my own!!).

I am not a teacher; I am an awakener!

Very skilled in teaching a variety of learning styles across the different areas of the multiple levels of intelligences.
I have taught in the education field since 1999. I am very fortunate to have had the privilege of working with a multitude of learners in a variety of environments. Early in my career I worked with adults that were mentally and physically challenged. I found this very rewarding and decided to pursue a degree in education, which lead me on my journey into the world of Special Education. I began working with children and young adolescents who had a variety of special needs and learning styles; I went on to specialized Autism and Special Education for K-12. After working with young children for many years I decided to branch out to work with young adolescents and adults pursuing their high school equivalency. My goal is to help your child achieve success. I explain real-life applications of the subject (i.e., metric system--repair of foreign cars.) I encourage questions and dialogue. I use praise when warranted but am firm on deadlines and honesty. Aware of attention span, I take appropriate breaks or switch to another subject. I remind him to read and follow directions and to check his work over before he hands it in. I believe that in this fast-paced technical age your child needs the best chance possible to compete successfully. I have found that even with one exposure, a good educator can have a huge positive impact upon a student's confidence and comprehension. It is very gratifying to both student and teacher when this occurs.
I have had a successful career as a medical scientist in hospital, government, and reference laboratories in the northeast and southern U.S., holding ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have BS degrees in education and industrial engineering. I also have an MS Teachers in Geosciences. I have worked for much of my career as an engineer but have also taught earth science at the high school level for two years in the recent past. I have great enthusiasm for the world we live in and the study of earth science. I look forward to working one on one with students that are having difficulty and helping them make the grade.
I believe a good teacher should have the following attributes. First, they should love their respective subject. Second, they should have real world experience that can tie to the lesson of the day. Third, they should understand the needs and desires of their students. Lastly, they must have a firm but fair method of classroom discipline. With the subject of earth science, I have the passion and experience to make a difference in your student's life.

Both my Education and work experiences have thoroughly enhanced both my knowledge, as well as my communications skills. Having a degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry, I have attained knowledge in various fields of science. Both in college as well in camps, I have had the privilege of tutoring people, primarily in the sciences.
I enjoy helping people acquire knowledge. I have experienced the full spectrum of both poor and excellent instructors myself, so I am aware of what needs to be done in order to facilitate learning. I assess the abilities of each person I work with and develop an approach accordingly. I think that a combination of patience and humor can provide for an outstanding learning environment, and I ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a graduate of Biology, I have been very driven to achieve excellence in all areas of my life. I have earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Psychology. I obtained my degree from a liberal arts university, which allowed me to experience focuses outside of my area of study. In addition, I have excellent grammatical skills due to years of writing research papers, on various topics, and laboratory reports. As a student, I tutored in history, chemistry, mathematics, and psychology.
As someone who has experienced the academic system, I understand that not every student learns the same way. I believe that everyone has the capacity for knowledge; they just have different learning techniques. With this in mind, I know that I can help your child reach academic success. I am patient, understanding, easy going, and willing to help in whatever way is needed. I know t ... read more

More About This Tutor...

As a recent college graduate, subjects such as chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, and geology are still fresh in my mind. I earned a BS in chemistry from Suny Oneonta where I was put into a diverse program. Over the last year I have received my NY Certification in coaching and have been accepted to Suny Cortland for Adolescence Education. In this time I have spread my scientific background to include more than just chemistry, taking additional collegiate credits in science with a focus on human anatomy and physiology.
To understand science all you have to do is look around you and ask questions. Science is a hands on subject, when you can touch something, feel it, watch it shine it will stick in your memory. My style is open and changes with the needs of the student. My goal is for the student to learn the material, as well as take an interest in the subject matter. When a s ... read more

Most of my career has been spent at IBM, where I built on my Physics background for a broad range of opportunities. I am now seeking to move into a teaching career and plan to start a Masters in Teaching in the Fall of 2009. During my educational development, I taught for three years in undergraduate and graduate school as part of the duties of a teaching Assistant. I have tutored secondary school students for the last 5 years in Math, Physics, and Chemistry.
I enjoy helping students understand the principles they are dealing with, rather than focusing on helping them simply "get the answer" to the problem at hand. My goal is for them to be able to generalize the concept and apply it in different contexts. To develop interest, I seek to discuss related information or similar problems as much as possible. For Physics in particular, this approach is key to providing a sound fou ... read more
