My teaching journey has taken me to many different places and I've had the opportunity to work with all ages of students from 3 year olds to college-age. Specifically I have experiences with students who are from culturally and linguistically diverse backrounds and also with students with special needs and learning disabilties. In the last few years I have tutored students one-on-one in organizational skills, studying for tests, writing and editing.
I find that students (myself included) learn best when they feel safe and that they can be successful. I believe it's important to teach in the zone of proximal development and build on a student's interests. The best way to do this is begin with activities that are fun and if it's possible, to access the creative side of the brain during learning to help students to relax.

Ever since working my first teaching internship as a junior in high school, I have gained a passion for teaching and helping others. After earning my B.A. in Psychology from Connecticut College, I worked for one school year as a teacher and tutor at a public school in upstate NY. Most of the students I worked with either had a learning disability or were absent from school due to suspension or health condition. After finding my niche working with students with cognitive disabilities, i gained my M.S.Ed in Rehabilitation Counseling. My teaching/coaching style is structured, organized, yet relaxed. I believe it's important to get to know the individual and his/her learning style before creating a personalized education plan for him/her. After discerning how a person best learns, I would tailor a program based on areas that most need improvement. Then we would design "classes" or units that are interesting and meaningful to the student.
